‘Every generation should move on and forget the beliefs and practices of previous generations.’

How far do you agree with this? Give reasons and details to support your view.

Answer:

I would say this depends on the beliefs or practices and also on the individual.

Explanation:

I can't think of an example for it because I think they vary depending on a person's culture/religion/etc., but one thing I do believe is that people shouldn't have to follow the same beliefs or practices as their family. I think every individual should be free to decide in what they want to believe rather than just having to follow what their family thinks. Otherwise, I think anything they practice or believe is okay and should be respected as long as it doesn't harm or disrespect anyone. I really hope this answer helps at least a tiny bit. :,)

I think of slavery, the farms, and crops, home cooking, country, and blues music, and raised plantations. I think this is because of history where the South wanted to keep slavery for the plantations. The farms and crops are techinqually the plantations where slaves worked non-stop in harsh conditions. Home cooking is what a lot of Southerner people do in my opinion. I think of country and blues music because of Tennessee.

In the lines: "In their up reach / songbirds nested, who scattered / seed for underbrush, and in that cover / warrened snowshoe hare."

Here interdependence is the theme. How birds who take shelter in high trees also aid in seed dispersal. And upon germination the seeds grow into shrubs, smaller trees where Hares live and breed.

Within Belfast the west of the city is predominately Catholic, east Belfast is largely Protestant, the south
of the city is more mixed, and north Belfast is a patchwork of Protestant and Catholic neighbourhoods.
We found that the everyday use of parks in west and north Belfast was often focused on local facilities–
within a 10–minute walk. People are prepared to travel for specific activities, but maintain a more
frequent relationship with local spaces which act as community hubs.
Remnants of The Troubles remain in Belfast. Distrust of Belfast City Council and the Police Service
Northern Ireland, as well as communities from different parts of the city, persists. Some residents stay in
their local area as it provides a sense of ownership and safety they may not feel elsewhere.

TEXT 3

The Re-Imaging Communities project

In Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, hundreds of colorful murals line the city’s streets, detailing a

century’s worth of conflict and political division. (…)

In 1998, the internationally-brokered Good Friday Agreement, also called the Belfast Agreement, officially

ended the conflict and set up a power sharing government between Protestant Unionists and Catholic

Nationalists. Since then the violence has largely subsided. But tensions still linger between Protestant

and Catholic neighborhoods, with some residents reluctant to bridge the gap. (…)

In the last several years, some communities have repainted portions of the most controversial murals or

erected new ones in an effort to continue normalizing relationships between Protestants and Catholics.

Under the Re-Imaging Communities project through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, some

communities received funding to create new murals in place of older images.

Questions

Make an account in English of the three texts in order to answer the questions:

• How is the current situation between Catholics and Protestants in Belfast portrayed in the three texts?

• What explanations for the situation and solutions for improvement are mentioned?

(150 words)

Answers

The texts show that despite the intolerance among Protestants and Catholics in Belfast, violence among them has diminished. This situation occurred through the Belfast Agreement and the political organization between Protestant and Catholic trade unionists.

We can arrive at this answer because:

Ireland was a bit of strong violence and religious intolerance. This is because Protestant communities and Catholic communities had a strong intolerance and generated extremely violent conflicts. This violence caused very serious social problems, which should not be allowed under any circumstances.

For this reason, the Irish government decided to create a new political reorganization between Protestant and Catholic trade unionists, through the elaboration of the Belfast Agreement.

Write a paragraph in which you describe the steps that experienced readers can use to analyze conflicting information in texts about the same topic. Explain why it is important for readers to recognize and evaluate conflicting information. Provide specific examples from the two texts. Write a paragraph in which you explain why it matters when the two authors interpret the same facts differently. Using specific examples from the two texts, describe the impact of the author's differing interpretations of the facts on you as a reader. Write a paragraph in which you explain how including a conflicting point of view and evidence in an argument can make it more persuasive. Describe the effect that including a conflict and point of view and evidence can have on readers. Give specific examples.

Answers

Answer:

Number 1 response:

The steps that experience readers can use to analyze conflicting viewpoints and information on the same topic are trying to understand both viewpoints, do their research, and then look at the conflicting viewpoints on the topic again to see their reasoning and evidence more clearly and so they can understand their opinions. It is very important for readers to recognize and evaluate conflicting information because the advantage of this is they won’t have much of an opinion when they must write an informative response because they’ve seen both sides and both arguments and evidence included. Some examples of this helping I will pull from ‘’Say no to genetically engineered salmon’’ and ‘’Genetically modified salmon can feed the world’’ (both from CNN I will leave the links in the bibliography). Let’s say for example you only read ‘’Say no to genetically engineered salmon’’ your information will be sided and you shall have no choice but to write information about one point of view on the topic making you more likely to mistakenly write an opinionated response whilst if you read both ‘’Say no to genetically engineered salmon’’ AND ‘Genetically modified salmon can feed the world’’ you will not only have an easier time to write a nonopinionated response but you will have more evidence and research on the topic from two sources on the same topic.

Number 2 response:

It matters when two authors interpret facts differently because its more informational when two people have different information about the same subject and you can get the topics on both sides of the argument therefore not have an opiniated topic on the matter and being able to write an informative response or essay. Yonathan Zohar believes genetically modified salmon can be of good use while one the other hand Rick Moonen believes otherwise. Zohar’s reasoning for his opinion is that since a great amount of people are going to eat fish more often because of the health benefits workers are spending more time and money to catch more fish, causing the factories to package them to overfill and causing a handful of fish that used to be extremely common to now barely seen in the wild so in solution he want to genetically modify salmon so more people can be feed and less resources are wasted. Moonen’s reasoning for his opinion is that genetically modified food, in general, is bad for you and he believes it's also a tactic to make already big companies more profit.

Number 3 response:

If you include a conflicting point of view and evidence in an argument it can make it more persuasive because lets say you just heard someone say something like ‘’ I think that we should use solar panels from now on anywhere and always no matter what’’, its not much evidence r much of an opinion even but its still a claim. Imagine right after somebody has an opposite opinion like ‘’yes I believe solar panels are more healthy but they’re expensive and if its night time we cant have electricity and if the sun goes dark somehow we will have no power and no way to have light or entertainment or contact’’ its significantly more persuasive because it provides evidence which makes their argument more causing to believe since it seems they know what they are talking about. The effect that the conflicting sides have evidence and fair reasoning can have on readers for people listening can be the fact that they have more information on the topic, that they can understand where both sides are coming from and for readers their response will be a more understanding and informational one and listeners will have more info on the topic like readers. The examples I will pull from ‘’Genetically modified salmon can feed the world’’. Imagine if Yonathon Zohar (the author of ‘genetically modified salmon can feed the world’) just blatantly said I think genetically modified salmon is good for us, no one, would be persuaded to be towards his belief so he put evidence, proof, and reasoning to his viewpoint for example; ‘’ Fish species that used to be plentiful, such as cod, plaice, haddock and others, are now rare in the wild. The king of the oceans, the giant bluefin tuna, is now near the point of no return, its stocks dropping precipitously in the past decade alone.’’ Stating that we are losing our amount of fish because the massive amount of fish we are fishing for food when we can just genetically modify it.

His universitys lab director in Manchester, Ernest Rutherford, immediately assigned Hevesy the Herculean task of separating out radioactive atoms from nonradioactive atoms inside blocks of lead. Actually, it turned out to be not Herculean but impossible. Rutherford had assumed the radioactive atoms, known as radium-D, were a unique substance. In fact, radium-D was radioactive lead and therefore could not be separated chemically. Ignorant of this, Hevesy wasted two years tediously trying to tease lead and radium-D apart before giving up.Hevesya bald, droopy-cheeked, mustached aristocrat from Hungaryalso faced domestic frustrations. Hevesy was far from home and used to savory Hungarian food, not the English cooking at his boardinghouse. After noticing patterns in the meals served there, Hevesy grew suspicious that, like a high school cafeteria recycling Mondays hamburgers into Thursdays beef chili, his landladys fresh daily meat was anything but. When confronted, she denied this, so Hevesy decided to seek proof.Miraculously, hed achieved a breakthrough in the lab around that time. He still couldnt separate radium-D, but he realized he could flip that to his advantage. Hed begun musing over the possibility of injecting minute quantities of dissolved lead into a living creature and then tracing the elements path, since the creature would metabolize the radioactive and nonradioactive lead the same way, and the radium-D would emit beacons of radioactivity as it moved. If this worked, he could actually track molecules inside veins and organs, an unprecedented degree of resolution. Before he tried this on a living being, Hevesy decided to test his idea on the tissue of a nonliving being, a test with an ulterior motive. He took too much meat at dinner one night and, when the landladys back was turned, sprinkled hot lead over it. She gathered his leftovers as normal, and the next day Hevesy brought home a newfangled radiation detector from his lab buddy, Hans Geiger. Sure enough, when he waved it over that nights goulash, Geigers counter went furious: click-click-click-click. Hevesy confronted his landlady with the evidence. But, being a scientific romantic, Hevesy no doubt laid it on thick as he explained the mysteries of radioactivity. In fact, the landlady was so charmed to be caught so cleverly, with the latest tools of forensic science, she didnt even get mad.
