what is the main conflict in shooting an elephant? is it external an internal or both

Answers

Answer 1

Explanation:

The story “ Shooting An Elephant” by George Orwell is about a man who lives in Bruma as a police officer. Bruma is under British control and they are not aloud to own guns. Being a British officer, the narrator was aloud to own one at the time. The story is told in first person, as readers learn about a traumatizing experience the narrator had in his past. When the narrator heard the news about an elephant going wild and destroying most of the Burmese homes, he rushed to find the elephant and shoot it. During his journey, he told himself that he would not shoot the elephant. But when he arrived face to face with the large mammal, with thousands of people watching, he shot it multiple times until the elephant fell. Minutes later, he came back with a different weapon brutally killing the elephant.

In a five-paragraph literary analysis essay, explain how each author develops the common theme. Compare and contrast how the authors develop this theme by referencing specific literary devices and techniques in your response.

"Response to Executive Order 9066"

"Mericans

Answers

Hi. Your question asks for a literary analysis of the texts "Response to Executive Order 9066" and "Mericans." In this analysis, you must show your perception of the themes covered in the text, the techniques used by the authors and the way in which these themes are developed.

As an analysis is your personal perception of the text, I cannot do this analysis for you, but I can show you how to do it.

Firstly, it is important that you read the texts and identify the topics covered. In general, both texts address the lives of foreigners, mestizos and people of different ethnicities in America. However, these themes are approached in very different ways. In "Response to Executive Order 9066" the author discusses how racism, discrimination and the existence of stereotypes with foreigners or descendants affect people's lives.

In this story, we meet an Nipo-American girl who is unfairly accused by her friend, a white American girl. The entire charge is based on racism and xenophobia. The author of this text, however, approaches this issue with delicacy, showing that although xenphobia is painful and present in the country, there is hope that it will be overcome through love and tolerance among people.

"Mericans" also addresses the experience of foreigners in America. The author addresses the life of Mexicans, who when living in America, begin to abandon their native customs, which are suppressed by American customs, although these people are not considered Americans by society. In this book, the author addresses themes such as acculturation and cultural identification.

After reading these two texts, you should write down your perceptions of how these themes are worked throughout the text and organize a five-paragraph essay that should be done as follows:

1st paragraph: This paragraph will be the introduction, where you will briefly present the two texts and present your position in relation to them, that is, you will briefly and objectively present your opinion about them. This will be your thesis statement.2nd Paragraph: Here you can present your insights into "Response to Executive Order 9066." In this paragraph you will show what you think of the theme, how this theme is worked, how the author reinforces this theme and the types of reflection it causes.3rd paragraph: Here you will present your perceptions of "Mericans" and show how the themes are covered, their perceptions and how the author works on these themes to provoke reflection in the readers.4th paragraph: In this paragraph, you will show how these two works are similar and different, even if they approach similar themes and can be easily related.5th paragraph: Here you will complete the text and show how these issues are presented in real life and how they can be solved, leaving society a much better place.

Answer:

The two authors use different ways of expressing a similar theme. Dwight Okita and Sandra Cisneros both present a common theme of race, culture, and ethnic background. Overall in their stories, they each get to the theme in a different way while getting a clear theme across. In, "Response to Executive Order 9066." the overall theme is racism and prejudices. The fourteen-year-old girl has a best friend who one day makes a racist and prejudice comment to her. The comment being, ""You’re trying to start a war,” she said, “giving secrets away to the Enemy, Why can’t you keep your big mouth shut?”". This comment made the fourteen year old girl shocked and left with no words. The author shows how the fourteen-year-old girl's best friend is being prejudice and  takes offense by the fourteen-year-old girl. For example, when the fourteen-year-old girl walked in her Geography classroom, her friend was no longer sitting next to her. In the text it states, "I saw Denise today in Geography class. She was sitting on the other side of the room." Overall, the author shows that the theme is racism by using prejudices of racist comments. In, "Mericans" the overall theme is race, culture, and ethnic background. The story talks about siblings who are at church with their grandmother not paying attention in mass. The children don't understand why the grandmother is so mean yet she still prays for everyone, living or passed. The author tells us this by saying, "The awful grandmother knits the names of the dead and the living into one long prayer fringed with the grandchildren born in that barbaric country with its barbaric ways." The grandmother doesn't like that the children don't understand and appreciate their culture. When the grandmother sends them outside for not paying attention, a woman calls one of the children over to take a photo in Spanish. When one child speaks English, the woman speaking Spanish says, “But you speak English!” to which the brother replied “Yeah,” my brother says, “we’re Mericans.” The children don't practice their culture or even pay attention to it. Overall, the author shows the theme is culture, ethnic background, and race in many ways. Both authors use the theme of race, culture, and ethnic background in many ways. Both authors use a short narrative to tall their stories. While they are talking about different races, they are also talking about ethnic background in different ways. In Sandra Cisneros's story “Mericans”, they are forgetting the ways of their culture and what it should mean to them. Instead of practicing their culture, they are picking up the ways of this country culture. Whereas in, “In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers”, the fourteen-year-old girl is being blamed and judged for her ethnic background and culture. Overall, both authors show how the characters are forgetting their cultural practices and being judged or looked at differently for their culture. Overall, both authors tell stories of issues that are presented in real life. Authors showed how this affect people and why. While using race, culture, and ethnic background, the authors created a theme that has a large meaning in our everyday lives.

Memories of a Memory

Have you ever witnessed something amazing, shocking or surprising and found when describing the event that your story seems to change the more you tell it? Have you ever experienced a time when you couldn't really describe something you saw in a way that others could understand? If so, you may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable as evidence in scientific inquiries and trials. New insights into human memory suggest human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things.

First, memory is vague. Imagine your room at home or a classroom you see every day. Most likely, you could describe the room very generally. You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations. But the image you describe will never be as specific or detailed as if you were looking at the actual room. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details. So when a witness tries to identify someone, her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people. There are lots of different kinds of "tall."

Second, memory uses general knowledge to fill in gaps. Our brains reconstruct events and scenes when we remember something. To do this, our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps. For example, one day at a library you go to quite frequently, you witness an argument between a library patron and one of the librarians. Later, when telling a friend about the event, your brain may remember a familiar librarian behind the desk rather than the actual participant simply because it is recreating a familiar scene. In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story.

Third, your memory changes over time. It also changes the more you retell the story. Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony that could not have been known at the time of the event. Research has also shown that the more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is. You may have noticed this yourself. The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add, or what your brain wants to add, to the account. You may also notice that you drop certain details from previous tellings of the story.

With individual memories all jumbled up with each other, it is hard to believe we ever know anything to be true. Did you really break your mother's favorite vase when you were three? Was that really your father throwing rocks into the river with you when you were seven? The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed. When it comes to memory, however, we may want to start carrying video cameras if we want to record the true picture.

Guys i need help, is this Logos, Ethos, or Pathos?

1. if you pollute you should be thrown into prison

Answers

Answer:

I would argue Pathos.

Explanation:

I would do process of elimination. Let's first look at logos. It doesn't really follow any logic. Let's next look at ethos. This one is a bit more promising, as you can argue that the government, or prison is an authority, but I would go with pathos, the appeal to emotion. There are two sides here; one is arguing that people who pollute should go to prison, and since people don't want to go to prison, it provokes an emotional response. Furthermore, prisons have negative connotations, so it could evoke a negative response within the reader that links prisons with pollution.

Hope this helps!

The given argument relating to pollution creates an emotional appeal, that is, pathos.

What were persuasive appeals?

Persuasive appeals were the kinds of argumentative appeals given by Aristotle in ancient times. They were of three types namely, Logos, Pathos, and Ethos.

Pathos was one type of persuasive appeal which usually triggers the emotions of people or the readers. The advertisements given by companies on electronic media are one example of it. In the provided argument, pollution is applied as a trigger to create a terror of emotion among people for getting into the prison.

Therefore, pathos, that is, an emotional appeal has been applied to the stated argument.
